Embracing SONKE
In 2025, the New Mexico Black Leadership Council (NMBLC) embraces SONKE as our annual theme. SONKE’s all about Sharing Our Narratives, Knowledge and Experiences.
"Sonke" means "all of us" in Zulu and encapsulates our shared journey, uniting New Mexico’s richly diverse communities. This and every year, NMBLC recognizes that each of our stories is a work in progress, connecting the past to the present and shaping our future.
Sharing Voices, Community
During 2025, NMBLC has curated a slate of events that highlight how each individual story adds depth to the collective. Together, our voices weave a tapestry of resilience, heritage, dreams, and hopes—stories that build authentic connections and strengthen our communities.
Celebrating Women’s History
March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor women's contributions throughout American history. We’re kicking off the celebration while imparting some wisdom and knowledge with our Women's Empowerment Panel and Luncheon on Wednesday, March 12. Join us to listen, share, and find strength in the unity of all of us in 2025 and beyond.
Read on for more on the Women’s Empowerment Panel and Luncheon. Stay tuned for future SONKE celebrations by checking our events calendar and following us on social media.

Save the Dates: Celebrate Women’s History Month
Women's Empowerment Panel and Luncheon
Wednesday, Mar. 12, 10am-12pm / noon
NMBLC Headquarters, 1314 Madeira Dr SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 and ONLINE
Panel topics will include generational mentorship as well as discussion of impostor syndrome and other issues related to women’s empowerment.
NMBLC’s Women's Empowerment Panel and Luncheon is a chance to connect with each other and share our stories of triumph over adversity. Black women are often referred to as the canary in the coalmine. We will talk about what that means and what steps are being taken and can be taken, locally and nationally, to course-correct and bend the arc towards justice and equity.
