Here at UpLift Chronicles, we recognize that parents and caregivers of school-age children have enough items on their to-do list come August. So we’re compiling and sharing the info and resources you need, along with print QR codes and online links to empower easy access and reference.
APS 101
This year, Albuquerque Public Schools welcomes new overarching leadership. Dr. Gabriella Durán Blakey took over as APS superintendent on July 1. In February, the APS board voted unanimously to hire Blakey for the position and she has been serving as acting superintendent since March. In that interim role, Blakey visited more than a dozen schools to talk with students and staff about district successes as well as areas where improvement is needed. She plans to schedule additional listening sessions in coming months.
Blakey is also a product of APS, as a former student of Sandia Base Elementary and Van Buren Middle School who graduated from Highland High. As for her motivation, Blakey said, “I want our schools to challenge and nurture students. I want to work with families and the community to give children what they need to be successful in the classroom. Above all, when the time comes for our students to graduate, I want them to be ready and have the skills to succeed no matter what they choose to do after high school.” Learn more about Dr. Blakey at bit.ly/blakeyaps.

On July 10, APS unveiled the district’s first significant website update since 2012. According to APS, the goals of the new website are easier navigation and mobile-friendliness. Featuring a fresh, streamlined design, an updated A-Z directory and easier-to-find entry points to all APS news, events, and info.
